Why Do You Need a License to Fly Your Own Drone?

As the drone rules become more stringent in India, it will soon be illegal to fly a drone without a valid drone pilot license. Failure to comply may result in penalties and punishment. To ensure a hassle-free experience and stay on the right side of the law, obtaining a drone pilot license is crucial.

Eligibility Requirements: To apply for a drone pilot license, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Age: You should be between 18 and 65 years old.

  • Education: A minimum education level of 10th grade from any recognized education board is required.

  • Medical Test: Clear a DGCA-approved medical test designed to assess your fitness for operating a drone safely.

Drone Pilot Training: Completing formal drone pilot training is an essential step towards acquiring your license. The training should be conducted by a DGCA-approved training center and typically spans a duration of 3 to 4 days. While you don't need to own a drone to enroll in the training, it's advisable to check the specific rules and requirements of each training institute.

Selecting an Approved Training Center: To ensure the legitimacy of the training center, access the list of DGCA-approved training centers. Contact the institute of your choice and ask for proof of approval from the DGCA. Beware of fraudulent centers, as certificates from unapproved institutes are invalid.

Applying for the Drone Pilot License: Once you meet all the conditions and complete the necessary training, it's time to apply for your drone pilot license. Follow these steps:

  • Visit the designated website and scroll down to find the "sign up as remote pilot" button.

  • Select the option for "an Indian pilot" and provide your name, email, phone number, and set a password.

  • Verify your email by entering the OTP (One-Time Password) sent to your email address. Without verification, you won't be able to proceed.

Benefits of a Drone Pilot License: While the new rules may seem burdensome, there are several advantages to obtaining a drone pilot license:

  • Worry-free flying: With a valid license, you can fly your drone without the fear of legal consequences.

  • Registered pilot database: By becoming a registered drone pilot, you enter a database accessible to those seeking licensed pilots for various projects. This can provide additional earning opportunities.

As the drone industry grows and regulations evolve, it's crucial to stay updated with the latest laws and requirements. By obtaining a drone pilot license in India, you not only comply with legal obligations but also position yourself for exciting opportunities in the world of drones. Keep an eye on any updates in the drone regulations and remain informed to ensure a successful and fulfilling journey as a registered drone pilot.
